May 10, 2014 • 1 - 6 pm Headquarters Library Celebrate horror, sci-fi, fantasy and graphic novels at SpartanCon, a new event for adults coming May 10th to the Spartanburg County Headquarters Library. Headlining SpartanCon is author C. Robert Cargill, author of Dreams and Shadows - a modern fairytale full of horror and fantasy - and screenwriter for the 2012 film Sinister. Join us for an afternoon with the authors, artists and designers who make you scream, gasp and stay up all night. Authors & special guests will take the stage and be available for autographs from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Get your costumes ready! Dress in appropriate cosplay for a chance to win two 4-day memberships to DragonCon 2014. Artists' Alley Artists from North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia will be stationed throughout the atrium and lobby with tons of cool art that can be purchased and taken home! C. Robert Cargill The headline author for SpartanCon is C. Robert Cargill, author of Dreams and Shadows - a modern fairytale full of horror and fantasy. Queen of the Dark Things, the sequel to Dreams and Shadows, is set for release in May.
Cargill began his career with Ain’t it Cool News under the pseudonym Massawyrm, writing there for over a decade, subsequently becoming a staff writer for film.com, hollywood.com and co-founding the animated movie review site Spill.com where he appeared as the animated character Carlyle. He is the screenwriter of the film Sinister, co-written and directed by Scott Derrickson and starring Ethan Hawke. He is currently working on the highly anticipated film adaptation of the hugely popular video game Deus Ex and the screenplay for Sinister 2. He lives and works in Austin, Texas.
Cargill will close our event with a discussion moderated by Converse professor Dr. Erin Templeton, and will take questions from the audience. Be sure to pick up a copy of his book from the Library Store as he will be autographing as well!

Brian Anderson The Prince's New Pet by Brian Anderson Panel Storytelling with author, artist Brian Anderson — Brian Anderson is the creator of the syndicated comic strip Dog Eat Doug. The strip enjoys an international fan base both on and offline and has recently joined the lineup of comics in the Charlotte Observer's daily comic pages. He is the author of several children's books, including Nighty Night, Sleepy Sleeps based on his comic strip characters, The Prince's New Pet and his latest book Monster Chefs, scheduled to be released this May.

Alex Hughes Clean by Alex Hughes Urban Fantasy with author Alex Hughes — Alex Hughes, the author of the award-winning Mindspace Investigations series from Roc, has lived in the Atlanta area since the age of eight. She is a graduate of the prestigious Odyssey Writing Workshop, and a member of the Science Fiction Writers of America and the International Thriller Writers. Her short fiction has been published in several markets including EveryDay Fiction, Thunder on the Battlefield and White Cat Magazine. She is an avid cook and foodie, a trivia buff, and a science geek, and loves to talk about neuroscience, the Food Network, and writing craft—but not necessarily all at the same time!

Ben Templesmith Calamari Rising by Ben Templesmith Drawing Demo & Conversation with comic book artist Ben Templesmith — Ben Templesmith is a New York Times bestselling artist and writer most widely known for his work in the comic book industry where he has received multiple nominations for the International Horror Guild Awards as well as the industry’s top prize, the Eisner Award. He also won a Spike TV Scream Award. He was born March 7th 1984, in Perth, Australia. Raised as an orphan by monks & studied marine biology and design at UWA.
As a creator, his most notable works have been 30 Days of Night (which spawned a major motion picture) and Fell. His other projects include the critically acclaimed serial Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse, as well as Welcome to Hoxford, and Singularity 7, all of which he also wrote. He’s also worked on Star Wars, Ten Grand, Doctor Who, GI Joe, Army of Darkness, Silent Hill and Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, among others.
