Unthrocon 2014

Who’s Behind This? Unthrocon is a production of Wasatch Regional Anthropomorphic Arts and Entertainment (d.b.a. WRAAE), a not-for-profit LLC in the state of Utah. WRAAE is new this year, since it looks like Unthrocon is viable and we’d like to keep it going in a legally and financially responsible way. WRAAE is pending recognition as a non-profit, which allows us to negotiate better pricing and offer lower convention rates with hotels and other venues. Who Was Behind This? No official organization, just a bunch of friends who had no idea what they were getting in to. Ancient History In 2012 we had a sort of “convention preview.” One ball room, one day, as many events as we could make work in the space. About 50 people showed up, which we took as a good enough sign to plan something like a con. Who Was Behind This? Same deal: bunch’a friends who apparently didn’t have enough sense and too much disposable income. Primordial Ooze “Unthrocon” was the name of a house-party that occurred on the same weekend as Anthrocon here in Salt Lake City. The whole joke being: none of us could go to Anthrocon, so we went to something that wasn’t Anthrocon; it was UNthrocon. This party occurred annually until such a time as the number of people showing up started to put the house we were using in danger of structural collapse, or at least a fire-code violation. So many interested parties made us think about hosting something bigger and swankier… So, Wait, You’re With Anthrocon? No, we are not. We are not now, nor have we ever been, affiliated with Anthrocon except in that both Anthrocon and Unthrocon have to do with the furry fandom. We have checked with the Anthrocon show-runners, and they seem to take our little joke on their name in stride, but let us be clear: we’re not with Anthrocon, we’re not run by the same people, and none of the Anthrocon directors are attached to Unthrocon.
